Did you know that you get a fresh start at your New Year’s Resolutions in just under 2 weeks?
What are you going to do with your new beginning? Invite in the positive, wash away the negative, I hope.
In a few short days, Koreans will launch their new beginnings all over (South) Korea with a multi-hour, cross-country traffic-jam in order to spend the upcoming week with their families. Altars will be lit. Rice cake soup will be slurped. Red envelopes will be given. Stores will be shut down for the week. And, if my extended family is any indication of other peoples’ rituals, television will be watched for so long that sores from sitting and lying down will develop.
We’re just a week-and-a-half from Lunar New Year. If you are 0, 12, 24, 36, or another multiple of 12 years: Congratulations! It is your Golden Year.** For all of us, whether or not we are observant — or even whether or not we care — it is the Year of the Ram.*
Here are 4 simple things I am doing this week in the House of Elisa to usher in the new & clean out the old for this New Year.
I’m naturally messy, so I need to feng shui small. If you’re anal-retentively organized, you might be horrified by this list. Everyone else: read on!
1. Recycle old calendars and replace clock batteries
Bottom line: Slow clocks and old calendars cause us to subconsciously live in the past. I need to live in the present. I do not want to be late for everything, or feel momentarily confused whenever I check for today’s date, just because my house is taking me backwards in time.
2. Wash all laundry. Even jackets I rarely wear and blankets that drape over the sofa.
Fresh clothes, fresh start. My mom used to tell me, “Messy room, messy mind!” It’s the same idea. Thanks, Mom.
3. Delete Flaky People from my cell phone and email contact lists.
I’m so sick of people who have no follow-through: You know, the people who constantly chirp/text/email, “Hey! We should do lunch sometime! I’d love to see you!” And who then never follow-through when you invite them out — in some cases, not even with a courtesy, “I’m so sorry, I can’t make it” RSVP.
I’ve been blessed with an abundance of awesome, beautiful people in my life. Why waste my time on flaky ones who don’t appreciate me enough to send a courtesy, 20-second text message? Even if they are well-intentioned or actually-really-cool-once-you-hang-with-them Flaky People, the reality is that Flaky People are an energy drain in my life: taking my emotional energy without giving back.
(Lest I come off as too-harsh, I’ve invoked a 3-attempts rule. I reach out 3 x, and if there is no acknowledgment, nor reciprocal invitation to do something else, I move on. Also, are you worried you’re a Flaky Person? Here’s my mini-guide on how to avoid that.)
It feels soooo good not to be reminded of those Flaky People via auto-select when I search for an Awesome Person to call!
4. Give away the clothing that is not Good-Vibe Clothing.
Last year, I gave away about 3/4 of my wardrobe and then had to wear the same pair of pants to work for 2 weeks straight, because I’d forgotten to buy replacement clothes.
Despite my best efforts, I still own clothes that are not Good-Vibe clothes. They are Bad-Vibe clothes, albeit cute items, that I must donate. The really, really pretty shirt that makes me itch? Donate it. The brand-new socks imprinted with the name of my former workplace? Donate them.
I still have to own some Neutral-Vibe clothes: black pants, tank tops that go under too-sheer work shirts. But I’d rather own just a few choice Good-Vibe clothes than a closetful of Bad ones.
And that’s it! I know I could — I should — do more. My house is a mess and I am too busy this week to find a vacuum attachment that will fit under the very, very low bed I own.
However, “I’ll never get it done 100% perfectly” is never a reason to do nothing. Always, a search for perfection is a reason to do something, no matter how small.
So, I need to start small. I am going to start somewhere & manifest my fresh start on the outside in some way. Lunar New Year is powerful, y’all. Koreans don’t sit through all that traffic for nothing.
Where will YOU start this year?
* Year of the Ram: AKA – “New Year’s Part 2.” AKA – “Your 2nd chance to get your New Year’s Resolutions off the ground.”
** Your Golden Year is a year in which your momentum is far stronger than other years. In other words, if you decide to do something in your Golden Year — please, decide to get a promotion, find love, or become a better friend. Do not decide to start doing cocaine. Whatever you do, the universe will carry you forward with 10x the force.
